Sophie Lewis

In Sophie Lewis’s work we fill in the gaps of unknown stories. Her models are filled with the mood of possibility but no resolution.  We are always left to wonder, to be intrigued or maybe even fearful of the possibilities of these places that we cannot enter.  We are given glimpses of stories, we can bring our own perceptions but never understand what has happened or can happen in these places. Their uncanniness lies not in their size but in the uneasiness of the atmosphere within the spaces. Using scale models Lewis creates these snapshots; scenes which exist out of time or fixed location but are instantly recognisable to us all. The intricate details of Lewis’s work act as miniature stage sets just waiting for actors to inhabit them.

Yet we are trapped outside, giants peering in on these uncanny replicas.
