Lauren Turrell looks at issues related to appearance through painting. Through first-hand experiences, Turrell learnt how image can affect confidence and behaviour. This influenced Turrell to explore ideas of beauty, and the importance of beauty in our society. Similarly, Turrell looks at prejudice and how people with deformities can be rejected from normal society.
The subjects of Turrell’s work are often carefully painted beautiful models who become deformed by the medium in various ways, such as drips of paint or smears from fingers and palette knives. Ultimately, Turrell’s work explores how appearance can affect a person’s life.
