Holly Priestley focuses on play and, through bodily engagement, she interacts with everyday and industrial objects and materials. The video documentation of these interactions and processes of making often evolve to become the work themselves, as they explore the performative relationship between the artist and the ‘thing’.
The absurdity and often failure of certain materials is integral to the work, as she showcases control and lack of control between herself and the object. She constructs and explores the small window of opportunity that is the point of balance, and communicates the nature of something which teeters ‘on the edge’, exploring a sense of tension and anxiety. The sensation of materials and the connotations that they communicate to the individual viewer are important in conveying the private and emotional nature of the work, from the artist to the spectator.
